SECRETARY KAWAMURA ENCOURAGES CALIFORNIA’S CATFISH PRODUCERS TO APPLY FOR FEDERAL GRANT FUNDS

Application deadline is November 15, 2007


SACRAMENTO – The California Department of Food and Agriculture encourages the state’s catfish producers to apply for federal disaster assistance to help compensate for the loss and damage to catfish feed as a result of natural disasters.  Funding is provided to eligible producers who were affected by natural disasters that occurred from January 2005 through February 2007. 


“California’s farmers struggle every year against natural disasters such as floods and fires, yet they consistently produce safe, high quality and nutritious food to feed the nation,” said CDFA Secretary A.G. Kawamura, “This grant is an opportunity for eligible catfish producers in our state to be compensated for their feed losses due to natural disasters.  I strongly encourage California’s catfish producers to apply for these funds.”


Impacted California catfish producers may be eligible to receive up to $80,000 funding under this grant. Completed applications must be received by the department not later than November 15, 2007. Applications and additional information for the Catfish Feed Compensation Program is available at www.cdfa.ca.gov.


The Catfish Feed Compensation Program is a U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency disaster assistance program that is administered by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. This compensation program is designed to provide federal assistance to eligible catfish producers affected by natural disasters.
