STATEMENT FROM CDFA SECRETARY A.G. KAWAMURA ON RECENT TRADE AGREEMENT BY THE UNITED STATES AND SOUTH KOREA

SACRAMENTO, December 6, 2010 — “The recent trade agreement between the United States and South Korea fosters greater cooperation and economic ties between both countries.”

“I congratulate all parties for moving forward a trade accord that promotes an expansion of exports. South Korea is the sixth largest export destination for California agricultural products. A ratified trade agreement will allow greater access for California’s farmers and ranchers by lowering and eliminating various tariffs on agricultural products. We are excited about the recent agreement and encourage Congress to move quickly on ratification.”

In 2009, California’s agricultural exports were valued at $12.4 billion. California’s exports to South Korea are estimated at more than $346 million. Top agricultural exports to the market include: oranges ($73 million), almonds ($50 million), walnuts ($48 million), beef and products ($41 million), and rice ($40 million).
