CALIFORNIA STATE BOARD OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE TO DISCUSS CLIMATE CHANGE ISSUES AT JANUARY 5TH MEETING

SACRAMENTO, December 30, 2015 – The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will discuss climate change issues at its upcoming meeting on January 5th in Sacramento. The meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the California Department of Food and Agriculture, 1220 N Street – Main Auditorium, Sacramento, CA 95814.

Climate change is a having an impact on California’s economy and environment and the state continues to take action through legislation, regulations and executive orders to address the issue. The State Board will hear reports by state agency represents on various aspects of California’s Climate Strategy, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emission to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. Presentations will focus on issues important to the agricultural sector – including short-lived climate pollutants, healthy soils and an update to the AB 32 Scoping Plan.

Continuing on the theme of climate change, the Board will also hear from Mark Jacobson, with the Stanford Wood Institute for the Environment, on his Blueprint for a Carbon-Free America that was recently published in National Geographic.

Other invited speakers include: Ken Alex, Governor’s Office of Planning and Research; Floyd Vergara, California Air Resources Board; Jenny Lester Moffitt, California Department of Food and Agriculture; Glenda Humiston, University of California, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Andrew Baskin, Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems.

The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and the CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The state board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials, agricultural representatives and citizens to discuss current issues of concern to California agriculture.
