BIFS Q&A

Q: Lygus is a serious pest in crops other than cotton. Why is there a priority only for lygus management in cotton?

A: Cotton growers have experienced unprecedented lygus outbreaks in recent years, while losing access to chemical management tools. This priority was developed to address this pressing issue. However, we recognize lygus is a widespread problem across crops, and we welcome any lygus proposal, especially those implementing areawide management approaches.

Q: The submission deadline shown on the RFP and website differs from the deadline shown in the CA State Grants Portal. Which is correct?

A: The submission deadline for concept proposals is July 26, 2024, as shown in the RFP. The CA State Grants Portal date has been corrected.

Q: Are there page or word limits for the concept proposal?

A: While there are no strict limits, we ask that applicants be as brief as possible while still providing enough detail for review.

During the second round of the application process (full proposal development), applicants will be able to revise or expand the concept proposal sections based on reviewer comments.

The goal of the revitalized Biologically Integrated Farming Systems grant program is to provide outreach of innovative, biologically integrated plant-based farming systems that reduce chemical pesticide inputs. CDFA is responsible for supporting agricultural production in California by fostering innovative, efficient and scientifically sound practices. Projects from this program should demonstrate IPM-based alternative pest management options that focus on economical and efficacious biological and cultural pest management techniques that allow growers to maintain yields and quality.
