Backyard poultry are especially at risk because they are often transported to and from different areas, including other countries, without any disease safety precautions. The USDA does require a 30 day quarantine for imported birds. Currently the USDA has banned bird imports from eight Southeast Asian countries effective February 4, 2004.

| Infected birds can still look like they are well, but still be carriers of germs. In fact, pet birds, especially parrots, can carry the virus that causes exotic Newcastle disease for more than a year without showing symptoms! These birds are called "carriers" of the disease. | |
